The Founder Of The Cable Television Industry
May 18th, 2011 by adminIn 1948 John and Margaret Walson started the Service Electric company in an effort to sell and repair appliances. The couple also sold televisions and to help sell them better an antenna was mounted at the top of a Pennsylvania mountain. John Walson then connected it by cable to his store in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania and hooked up a few houses along the way creating the first Cable Antenna Television system. Walson was able to demonstrate the sets in his store with 3 stations that were being received by his antenna from Philadelphia.
He is officially regarded by the National Cable Television Assosiation and is recognized by the United States Congress as the founder of the cable television industry. Along with being the founder of cable television he was also the first to begin to innovate the industry by implementing improvements like coaxial cable for better picture quality and he was the first to use microwaves to receive stations from a distance. Service Electric company is now Service Electric Cablevision Inc. and is still a family owned private business that is dedicated solely to television programming and John Walson’s legend as the founder of the cable industry is firmly rooted in the companies history and in the history of our country.
