The 1984 Cable Act And Its Affect

October 30, 1984 the Cable Communications Policy Act was passed by Congress to promote completion and deregulate the cable industry. This act is also known as Public Law 98-549, and established a national regulation policy by federal, state and local authorities. It came about due to the need for determination of who would hold regulatory authority for cable communications.

The Founder Of The Cable Television Industry

In 1948 John and Margaret Walson started the Service Electric company in an effort to sell and repair appliances. The couple also sold televisions and to help sell them better an antenna was mounted at the top of a Pennsylvania mountain. John Walson then connected it by cable to his store in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania and hooked up a few houses along the way creating the first Cable Antenna Television system. Walson was able to demonstrate the sets in his store with 3 stations that were being received by his antenna from Philadelphia.
